Which is what the the existing class-based code did: it performed a verify-key on instantiation and then could re-use the verified credentials after that point (or raise an immediate exception if the credentials were missing or invalid). I really like the ergonomics of that, since it makes it much more difficult to create an Akismet client in an invalid/misconfigured state, but it basically requires some sort of shared state. Even if the API key and site URL are read from the environment or passed as arguments every time, there needs to be some sort of additional information kept by the client code to indicate they’ve been validated.
